Retail Means Selling to End Consumers: Types and Examples When you buy a drink at a minimarket or order a shirt from an online store, you are making a retail purchase. It is part of everyday life and one way products reach the people who use them. If you want to start a business, understanding retail will help you identify your customers, decide how to sell your products, and prepare for daily operations. To make it easier to picture, here is an explanation of retail businesses, their types and examples, and the first steps you can take. What Is Retail? Retail is the sale of goods or services to end consumers for their own use, rather than for resale. In Indonesian, retail is also known as ritel or penjualan eceran. A retail business carries out this activity through a physical store or an online channel. It may buy products from suppliers or make its own products, then sell them directly to consumers. For example, a cookie maker who sells a jar to a customer for their own consumption is making a retail sale. But if the cookie maker supplies many jars to another store for resale, that transaction involves selling to an intermediary. Retail serves end consumers, while wholesale generally sells to businesses or buyers who will resell the goods. Retail often handles individual purchases or small quantities. Wholesale usually involves larger volumes and a different price per unit based on the quantity purchased or the agreement. However, the number of items alone does not always determine the category. Someone who buys many products for personal use can still be an end consumer. That is why you should consider the purpose of the transaction, not just the number of units purchased. Types of Retail by Sales Channel 1. Offline Retail Sales take place at a physical location, such as a neighborhood shop, minimarket, clothing store, or food outlet. Customers can see the goods directly, ask the seller questions, and take the products home after paying. 2. Online Retail Sales take place through a website, marketplace, or social media. One example is an accessories store that accepts orders through a digital catalog and ships them to buyers’ addresses. 3. Retail with Offline and Online Channels A business can have a physical store while also accepting online orders. If stock, product information, and customer processes are connected across channels, it can develop an omnichannel experience. Simply having two channels does not automatically mean its operations are integrated. Everyday Examples of Retail Here are some retail examples and the operational needs to consider: • Neighborhood essentials shop: keeping frequently requested items in stock. • Fashion store: managing size and color options and providing accurate fabric information. • Home goods store: providing details about product functions, sizes, and how to use them. • Frozen food business: maintaining proper storage conditions and choosing suitable shipping. • Home bakery: managing production capacity, shelf life, and order schedules. The sales model can grow as the business expands. What matters is keeping the products, service, and order fulfillment aligned with customer needs. How to Start a Retail Business 1. Identify Your Customers and Their Needs Start with a specific customer group. For example, you might want to provide snacks for office workers near your business. Find out how much they tend to spend, when they buy, and what kinds of products they need. 2. Choose Products Based on Your Capital and Stock Management Capacity Avoid offering too many variants right away. Start with a selection whose quality and sales you can monitor. Products with a short shelf life require more careful production planning. 3. Calculate Selling Prices and Operating Costs Account for purchasing or production costs, packaging, platform fees, and other business expenses. If you subsidize shipping or offer promotions, include those costs in your margin calculations. Higher revenue does not necessarily mean higher profit. 4. Record Stock Movements for Each Variant Track stock separately by product code, size, or flavor. Check physical inventory regularly and update availability across all channels so customers do not order items that are actually out of stock. 5. Provide Clear Information and Service Include photos, prices, sizes, storage instructions, and relevant transaction terms. Answer customer questions accurately and explain the available solutions if a problem arises. Read More: 7 Marketing Strategies to Help Your Online Business Grow and Last 6. Choose Sameday or Nextday based on your needs and route availability, then make sure the package’s size and packaging meet the service requirements. What Does Out of Stock Mean? Causes and Ways to Handle It A customer has chosen a product, but when they are about to pay, they discover it is unavailable. This situation may cause buyers to delay their purchase or look elsewhere, especially if they need the item soon. For sellers, running out of stock can also disrupt operations when catalog information does not match actual inventory. That is why understanding stock status and how to handle shortages should be part of store management. If you often see this term on marketplaces, let’s find out what out of stock means and what you can do when it happens. What Does Out of Stock Mean? Out of stock means a product is not currently available in sellable inventory. This condition is also called a stockout. The status may apply to an entire product or only a particular variant. For example, a white shirt in size M may be unavailable while size L is still in stock. That is why stock should be recorded at the variant level to give customers more accurate information. Out of stock does not automatically mean a product is no longer made. It may become available again after restocking, but the timing depends on production or the supplier. Read More: 5 Ways to Start an Online Business from Scratch The Difference Between Out of Stock, Sold Out, and Pre-Order In sales, the terms out of stock and sold out are sometimes used interchangeably. However, there are differences in emphasis: • Out of stock describes an item that is currently unavailable, whether because it has been purchased, supply is delayed, or records are inaccurate. • Sold out usually emphasizes that all available units have been purchased, such as a limited-edition collection. • Pre-order is a system for ordering before an item is ready to ship. Sellers need to explain when it is expected to be ready and the applicable terms. • Discontinued means a product has been withdrawn and is no longer produced or marketed by the relevant party. Do not immediately turn an unavailable product into a pre-order if its supply schedule is unclear. Customers need to know when the item is expected to be ready and what options they have if plans change. Why Products Go Out of Stock 1. Demand Rises Unexpectedly Popular content or large orders can cause stock to run out faster. To prepare, watch sales patterns and add capacity according to your available capital and production capabilities. 2. Stock Updates Are Not Synchronized Across Channels If a product is sold through a physical store, marketplace, and chat, separate records may make it appear available even though it has already sold through another channel. 3. Supply or Production Is Delayed Delays in raw materials, production, or deliveries from suppliers can postpone restocking. Record the actual time between placing an order and having an item ready to sell so purchasing plans are more realistic. 4. Inventory Records Do Not Match Physical Stock Damaged or lost products, or items that were not recorded as leaving inventory, can create differences between system records and physical stock. Regular checks help identify discrepancies before you receive an order you cannot fulfill. How to Handle Out of Stock Products Without Confusing Customers 1. Update Product Status Promptly Disable unavailable variants or display an unavailable status. If a customer has already ordered the product, contact them promptly and explain the situation and their options. 2. Be Honest About Restocking Estimates If the schedule is uncertain, say you are still waiting for confirmation. For example: “The chocolate variant is currently out of stock. We are still confirming the restock date. If you would like, we can let you know when it is available again.” 3. Offer Relevant Alternatives Ask whether the customer would consider another size, color, or product. Explain the differences, including any price changes. Only change the order after the customer agrees. 4. Create a Restock Notification List With the customer’s consent, record their contact details so you can notify them when the product is available again. Send messages as requested, and avoid promising priority access unless you have a clear reservation system. Read More: 5 Signs of a Good, Promising Business Opportunity to Know Before Starting Prevent Stockouts with a Reorder Point Decide when you need to order more stock. As a simple illustration, if you sell an average of 5 units a day and your supplier needs 4 days, you need 20 units to cover expected sales while waiting for new stock. If you add 10 units of safety stock, your reorder point becomes 30 units. This is only an example that assumes demand and supply times are relatively stable. Adjust it for changes in sales, available capital, and product shelf life. For food, holding too much stock also increases the risk of products expiring. Inventory planning should take quality and the speed of stock turnover into account. Distinguish the wait for stock from the package’s delivery estimate so customers receive clear information. You can create a shipment in the Paxel app and choose a service based on the route and the package’s needs. Use pickup to have the package collected from your location, then share tracking information with the customer once the shipment has been created.
